Actor and screenwriter Taleh Yuzbeyov gave an interview to Kult.az.

– Fateh, from the outside, it seems that there is nothing wrong with your acting and writing, and you can make money. But even if it doesn’t work, you start to get involved in another field, such as the catering industry. Or do you do something else because your field is not profitable?
– My desire to open a restaurant was not entirely about finances. First of all, I wanted to have a place where I could hang out with my friends and creative people. For us to get together, talk, discuss our work. Until the 20th century, there were places in Paris where artists, poets and writers gathered. Another goal was to get a passive income and meet certain needs. This is also my favorite job. I wanted to open a restaurant from the beginning. To be honest, when I opened the restaurant “Yuzcafe”, I was so sure of myself that I thought I would not fail in anything. But I woke up and realized that I could fail, and that’s also a good thing. I thought, I knew, I would not sink – it didn’t happen. In a way, this incident was a lesson for me, it made me not to be complacent.
– Maybe because you suffer from celebrity sickness, you think fame will help?
– Yes, I think fame helps. But it’s not celebrity sickness. People who know me know that I’m not that kind of person. Fame never deceives me in serious matters.
– Taleh, there is a lot of social dialogue in your work, and also a spirit of protest. For example, you are a bit sarcastic…
– Yes. I used to make more videos like this. What I experienced, what happened to me, what I saw encouraged it. The first book I read was Hophopname by Mirza Alakbar Sabir. The effect of sarcastic dialogue can also be created from here. Bulgakov is one of my favorite authors. In my first videos there were a lot of protests, getting bolder and bolder. But that’s why I didn’t have any problems. I didn’t think it was so necessary. For example, I don’t think that a corrupt official should see his image and withdraw from his actions. I am now in favor of showing more good things. After all, no one accepts his own evil. In the past, I had a lot of protest videos about gas and electricity prices. Now I think, this is also populism.
– So you do this for fame, are you a populist?
– Not at all. I do this not just because of populism. I have made comments on my agenda, but I don’t do it anymore, I don’t want to be seen as an opponent.
– Why don’t you make a film about the Karabakh war?
– I don’t know about other colleagues, but it’s hard for me. Among those martyrs I have close friends, and it’s hard for me. I’m not even keen on going to reclaim land. It’s OK to make some patriotic depictions of the war, as well as the background. Maybe I’ll paint it later, but there are no such ideas at the moment. For me, it’s not OK to show only the victory of the war. I think if I depict the war as I want, they will criticize me.
– Taleh, your last work, the TV series “Alatava”, was not only praised, but also criticized and opposed. For example, there were comments from artists such as “domestic themes”, “local nature”, “weak ending”, “nothing is said”. In general, what was your goal in making this series?
– It would be more appropriate if Alikhan Rajabov talked about the message and purpose of the series. But as one of the screenwriters, I can say that my attitude towards these criticisms is normal. No, I do not agree with talking about topics like family affairs. First of all, what is wrong with domestic affairs? Not able to draw, talking about family? What kind of seriousness do artists who make such statements expect from the children of “Alatava”? So, is the afterlife of the children of the orphanage in the country? Are the cases of betraying friends for money, pedophilia or violence just empty talk? Can’t they work?
– Why not work with modern writers and film something based on their stories and scripts? Or do you think you can do it better?
—First of all, it’s a business problem, the system is not right. The author and we have to have agents, the material has to be presented and sold. That’s how this process happens in the world. We don’t have such professionalism. Moreover, everything is not so comfortable. I have had my own script for two years, but I can’t find a sponsor. Why? “A man hanged himself.” I say, it won’t die. I show with my script that suicide is bad, an irresponsible act, and a brave, selfish step. What about those who stay? They don’t support suicide. I don’t know how it looks from the outside, but God, it’s not easy, we can hardly find funding. From this point of view, it’s not easy to turn a certain writer’s story into a screenplay.
– What modern authors have you read?
– I read a lot of people, we have a lot of talented writers. Among the writers of the 2000s, there are Ali Akbari, Semuru, Aghshin Yenishei… Last time I read Aghshin’s novel “History and Fate”. I liked it, too. Then I read Ilkin Rustamzadeh’s book, which was very interesting. Sorry, I didn’t read it, all because of lack of time. Reading used to be my habit. It’s true that I read more plays – Shakespeare is very good, I like Chekhov’s stories more than Chekhov’s plays, I read all the works of Bulgakov, Dan Brown, Steinberg. Márquez is one of my favorite writers. I even try to read all the works of one author, I like this systematic reading. Márquez’s magic realism attracts me. I would even say that this is what I want to do in my films. For me, the films I make should be a combination of Márquez and Shahriar’s poetry. Complex and difficult, but also simple, beautiful and national.
– One point you were criticized for in your films and videos has to do with women. Some people say you are insulting women. What is your problem with women?
– When I write a character, I have no intention of degrading her because she is a woman. Well, how negative is my male image, why don’t men say why do you make us look like this? From the image of a pedophile to an adulterer on duty – I have all kinds of images. All of them. Aren’t there prostitutes? Yes. I’m not saying “men and women are the same”, but that we should be equal under the law.
-Aren’t you a feminist?
– I am not. In general, I am allergic to ideologies. All ideologies are doomed to fail, no ideology is ideal. They see politics and democracy in the world after what Israel did to Gaza. I don’t like radicals. Whether they are radical feminists, religious people or whatever. So, the problem cannot be seen one-sidedly. Yes, there is violence and oppression against women in our country, but it is not as radical feminists say. Once, when I was lynched by feminists, I said, well, I was wrong, so come on, help, work, paint, educate. I will do whatever needs to be done as an actor, screenwriter, director. No one shows their breasts.
– You once said that my goal was to win an Oscar at the age of 36. What happened to this goal?
– I knew that one day I would win an Oscar and other awards. I saw myself there, but at the time my dream was like a childhood wish for me. I realized that the purpose of making films should not be awards. But I knew that one day I would win an Oscar.
– What award would you like to receive in Azerbaijan?
– I am against names in general. Because when I was a student, I used to hate seeing artists drop out of the game because of their names. What has changed? You can get additional money of 50-100 manats. When you are invited somewhere, this word is written in front of your name. My love for art is different. I was separated from art before. I remember, I used to work in the theater, I was poorly paid, they told me about casting, but they didn’t call me. I told my parents, be patient, it will be fine soon. Later we rented an apartment, and I had more responsibilities. Then I had to change my field and do other work.
– What job?
– For example, I answered calls in a “call center”, I worked in sales at a company. But the love of art did not leave him alone. Then I saw kids making videos. To get rid of this bug, I started making videos again. And then I became famous (laughs).
– Taleh, I’m curious, what was the lowest and highest fee you received?
– I take photos for free, the fee is 100 manats.
– What is the maximum?
– To be honest, I think it’s unethical to say this, but it happens a lot.

– Can you buy a house in the city center or in the suburbs with this money? I asked for clarification on the amount.

– Taleh, honestly, who can you name among the young actors who is better than you?
– To be honest, Farhad, Azer Ademir, Hikmat Rahimov are better actors than me.
– If they are weaker than us, is it worth the risk?
– Absolutely. To be honest, I don’t think I’m the best actor.
– Taleh Yuzbeyov What are three actors you don’t like?
– For example, I would say that Lutfali Abdullayev is not my actor. Later, Arif Guliyev. He is a good actor, but his material is bad. There is more vaudeville and street theater. Let the third one stay.

– He knows it’s just a job. I’ve said from day one that this could happen, please take that into account.
– Artists usually don’t want their children to follow this path because of the pain and difficulty. Do you want your child to become an actor?
– Actually, I don’t have such a ban, I can’t. I don’t get involved in these issues. I grew up freely and most of the time I made my own choices. Although they didn’t want me to become an actor, once I became an actor, they supported me. Therefore, I support whatever areas they want to focus on.
