The self-service urn collection cabinet at the Rauhannummi crematorium in Hyvinkää has also attracted interest from other parishes.
Last February, at the Rauhannummi crematorium in the parish of Hyvinkää, something was invented that can’t be found anywhere else in Finland: urns containing the ashes of the deceased can be picked up from a self-service takeaway cabinet at the crematorium.
Specialists at Rauhannummi Crematorium Sammy Skinnery The idea of setting up a self-service collection point for urns was born out of feedback, Skinner said. The most important reason is that the opening hours are more flexible, which is particularly suitable for working age groups, according to Skinner.
You can collect your urn from the parish office Monday to Thursday from 9am to 3pm and Friday from 9am to 1pm, but the self-collection point is open from 7am to 10pm daily. You can choose to self-collect your urn using the parish’s online form.
– After all, other parishes have seen this and are clearly interested, Foreman Aulikki Raunemo Tell.
However, Launemo and Skinner had no information that other places had done or decided to do the same thing.

Feedback was mostly positive
Skinnar said most public feedback on the takeaway lockers had been positive, but the new concept had also attracted criticism, especially in the initial stages.
– Finland has a funeral culture where urns are associated with it. Skinnery said people are worried that customer service or human interaction will disappear completely.
Raunemon said they tried to make the space as comfortable as possible.
– We wanted to make this space cozy, says Raunemo, because it has many similarities with the store’s entrance.
Skinnar said that while the use of self-service lockers is becoming more common, the vast majority of people still prefer office services.
– I want to emphasize that this is just one option. Skinnari emphasizes that it is not the only option.
I’ve said it before Morning Mail.
