Biden almost said he would not run for re-election

President Joe Biden has all but decided not to run for president of the United States, ending his reelection campaign.

Biden posted on X that he will continue to serve as President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces until his term expires in January 2025.

He added that he would address the nation this week.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. While I intend to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and our country that I step down and focus on the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

His withdrawal paved the way for his successor, Kamala Harris, to become the first Black woman to run for president.

Biden, 81, announced in a separate statement that he fully supports Harris as the Democratic nominee.

However, it is unclear whether top Democrats will challenge Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, or whether the party will choose to open the race to anyone.

Biden’s decision follows a flurry of overt and covert pressure from Democratic lawmakers and officials to drop out of the race following his poor debate performance with Republican nominee Donald Trump.
