Due to the prolonged heat wave that has plagued the island and limited water flows in winter, the water level in dams across Cyprus has dropped to 36.8% full.
According to water department data, as of July 19, the total water storage in the dam was 107 million cubic meters, accounting for 36.8% of the dam’s total capacity, while in the same period last year, it was 176.6 million cubic meters, accounting for 60.7%.
The Nicosia Dam recorded the lowest utilisation rate on July 19 at 29.8%, compared to 76.3% in the same period last year, while the total utilisation rate of the South Agog dams (including Kouri, Cyprus’ largest dam) was 33.8%, compared to 56.5% in the same period last year.
On July 19, the combined occupancy of the four Chrysochou dams was 41.1%, compared with 64.6% at the same time last year, while the combined occupancy of the Paphos dams was 43.5%, compared with 69.8% at the same time last year.
According to the water authorities, water intake is limited to 24.5 million cubic meters from October 1, 2022 (the beginning of the hydrological year) to July 19, 2023, compared with 48.77 million cubic meters from October 1, 2022 to the end of September 2023.
It is worth noting that due to the particularly low water flows at the dams and, as a result, the low utilization of the dams, the government included additional funds of 58.1 million euros in the supplementary state budget for the purchase of water and the operation of the desalination plant.
