The Central African government on Wednesday welcomed the voluntary disarmament of 250 former combatants of the Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC), not far from Bossangoa in northern Central African Republic. There was also an opportunity to recall the kidnapping of two Chinese citizens in Nana-Mamberekonde.
The 250 former combatants laid down their arms in Korompoko, Ouham, on July 9. According to government authorities, they will be included in the disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and repatriation (DDRR) process. For the government, the voluntary disarmament of former CCP members strengthens the authorities’ efforts to restore security and peace throughout the country.
“Very good news”
“The surrender of these former Chinese Communist fighters in Wamco Lompoco is very good news. This disarmament really brings us back to peace. The government will work within the framework of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste so that they can be trained and see those who can integrate the defense and security forces and those who want to work in agriculture and other fields…”, said Maxime Balalou, communications minister and government spokesman.
Keep investors away
On July 8, two Chinese citizens were taken hostage near Beroko in Nanamanbere in the west. The government believes that this attitude of the armed groups is aimed at deterring mining investors in the country. “For some time now you have noticed that Chinese have been killed or kidnapped. This is to deter investors in the process of assessing our resources for the benefit of the respective communities. The government is working in this direction but these actions are in vain for all those who think that the best solution is weapons. A government spokesman condemned the move.
Recently, armed violence has broken out again in many parts of Central Africa, and armed groups have increased their attacks on the positions of the Central African armed forces, especially civilians.
