Poland wants the EU to launch a campaign in the United States to raise public awareness of the importance of relations between the two countries.
In a document prepared for a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday, Poland called for aggressive action before the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election to counter what it called Russian “disinformation” aimed at sowing division between the bloc and Washington.
“At this critical moment in history, we must act together swiftly and forcefully to strengthen the transatlantic relationship by engaging strategically in the United States on the European Union,” the document seen by Reuters said.
It added: “This means stepping up our efforts to expose, and even more importantly, pre-empt Russian disinformation, and conducting activities to clarify Europe’s current positions and the benefits of diplomacy, collective security and open societies.”
The Kremlin said it would not interfere in the U.S. election in November. It also rejected U.S. accusations that it orchestrated campaigns to influence the 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections.
Polish newspapers say Russian state media and Kremlin-linked online accounts are spreading and amplifying misleading content about U.S. immigration and border security, distorting the impact of immigration, highlighting stories of immigrant crime and warning of dire consequences if the U.S. does not crack down on its border with Mexico.
“We should expect more to come, as reducing support for Ukraine remains a top priority for Russia. We need to remind the American public, especially younger generations, that our decades-long partnership has delivered results for the U.S. economy,” the newspaper said.
Poland says it has been the target of repeated Russian destabilization and election interference attempts because of its military aid to neighboring Ukraine, accusations Russia denies.
Referring to U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump’s claim that Europe is giving Ukraine much less aid than the United States, the Polish newspaper said: “We should raise awareness among the American public about the scale of European aid to Ukraine and how it helps save Ukrainian lives.”
The EU has provided 107 billion euros ($116.38 billion) to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in 2022 and has agreed to provide a further 50 billion euros over the next four years.
The Council on Foreign Relations estimates U.S. support for Ukraine at $107 billion.
