MOGADISHU (HOL) – The Attorney General’s Office in Mogadishu has taken firm action against expired food items seized at the Mogadishu port on March 7. The expired food items, mainly flour, were meant for the local market and could endanger the health of the people.
The Somali Quality Control Agency, which was investigating the matter, found as many as seven containers of expired flour. The information was then shared with the national investigation department.
The Turkish Attorney General’s Office took over the case from the Turkish Quality Control Agency in March this year and confirmed that the flour was expired. Therefore, the authorities decided on Sunday to return the flour to Turkey, its country of origin, and seek compensation from the relevant companies.
Speaking to the media at the port, prosecutor Mustafa Muallem Ali Salad explained the decision: “After a thorough investigation and submission of evidence to the court and the Attorney General’s Office, it was decided that the flour should be sent back to its place of origin. The seven containers have been reloaded and verified to have not changed since they were seized. The containers have been guarded by the Somali Police Force at the port.”
The prosecutor also noted that the investigation report will be shared with the Turkish government to hold the exporting companies accountable. “The documents, evidence and investigation report will be handed over diplomatically to the Turkish government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and shared with the Turkish Embassy,” he said.
In addition, the Quality Control Agency has issued a strong warning to Somali companies and traders, saying strict action will be taken against anyone importing expired food into the country.
