In the German town of Meckenbeuren in the Lake Constance region, about 1,300 people had to leave their homes due to severe flooding risks. A spokesman for the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg said late Friday that this was not an evacuation but a recommendation.
Flooding is expected due to continued rainfall, particularly on the Shusen River, but there is also an increased risk of flooding on other waterways in the region.
Firefighters had warned residents in dangerous areas to stay with family or acquaintances, causing some people to leave their homes. Mayor Georg Schellinger said in a statement that he remained hopeful that weather conditions would change and flood levels would not be as severe as expected.

However, flood levels in the Schussen River could reach previous levels overnight Friday into Saturday. The mayor said an evacuation advisory had been issued on Friday so that everyone could “adapt to the difficult situation in a timely manner.”
Heavy rain is expected to continue over much of Baden-Württemberg, especially in Bavaria, this weekend. In some places, up to 150 liters of rain could fall per square meter.
