On the occasion of the 2024 Olympic Games, the Council of Ministers voted to make the scheduled public road transport network “Tere Tahiti” completely free from July 26 to August 5, 2024.
The regulator said in a press release “The purpose of public transport pricing is to encourage people to choose alternatives to the private car, taking into account the specific needs of certain groups of people (young people, Matahiappos, etc.). These regulations have been supplemented to introduce the possibility of introducing temporary freebies on the entire or part of the network, especially during special events.
That is why all users of the 21 regular intercity (long distance), suburban (medium distance) and urban (short distance) lines will be able to benefit from it. No transport tickets may be sold during this period and no travel costs will be deducted from prepaid cards.
To facilitate its success, the free service also required airline SAS RTCT to provide trilingual communications (French, English and Tahitian), which also had to be deployed via digital media and displays.
In summary, the government maintains that “The regular freebies are a measure to promote the use of public transport and are part of the goal set out in Tahiti’s Collective Mobility and Sustainable Travel Master Plan to make public transport more attractive, to combat road congestion and to meet the travel needs of tourists and those who want to attend this historic event, with the aim of including the most economically disadvantaged, making these Games accessible to everyone.
