Cristiano Ronaldo brought the crowd to its feet with a spectacular bicycle kick in Al Nasser’s Saudi Cup final against Al Hilal on Friday night. After a tense match that saw three red cards, a delay eventually had to provide a solution.
Aleksandar Mitrovic broke the spell early in the final. The Serbian headed in a cross from former Barcelona striker Malcom. For Mitrovic, it was already his 40th goal of the season.
The game really got going shortly after half-time. After a powerful individual move, Otavio passed the ball to Ayman Yahya, who then tried to cross to find Ronaldo.
The 39-year-old Portugal star attacker attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick but, to his own dismay, his stunning shot ended up hitting the post. Former Arsenal and Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina then went to Al Nasr’s defence. The finisher made a hand save outside his own box and was sent off.
Finally, the sting came in his tail when Al Hilal defender Ali Al Bulayhi was shown a red card in the 87th minute after a head-on confrontation with an opponent. Yahya then headed in a long throw-in to make it 1-1.
The scene was not over yet. Kalidou Koulibaly, who left Chelsea for Saudi Arabia for big money in the summer of 2023, received a second yellow card after regular time, and therefore a red card.
The referee on duty penalized the defender for running past the Al Nasr goalkeeper. As a result, Al Hilal started the build-up with nine men. The two teams were currently tied 1-1 at the end of extra time.
