MOGADISHU (HOL) – Federal MP Abdirissah Abdullahi Muallem Eide has accused government officials of threatening to kill him after he made comments on Al-Shabaab’s attacks on Mogadishu Central Prison and Top Café restaurant.
The MP stressed during Saturday’s parliamentary session that he had been threatened with a gunshot wound to the head and had been wrongly labelled a member of al-Shabaab.
“I am not a member of al-Shabaab, but I care about my people because I have a sense of responsibility. I am a representative who was chosen to speak about these issues. They finally said if you talk about this issue again, you will be shot,” the lawmaker said.
He added that the government has not taken any action to address the threats.
Councillor Eide did not reveal who had threatened him but vowed to prepare a report for parliament on the people who had threatened him.
At least eight people were killed in a gunfight between security forces and prisoners in a prison in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Colonel Abdiqani Khalaf, spokesman for the Somali Army Custodial Force, said that during the conflict, armed prisoners tried to escape from the prison, and then exchanged fire, resulting in the deaths of five prisoners and three soldiers.
The prison incident was followed by a car bomb explosion outside the Top Café restaurant in Mogadishu, killing at least nine people and injuring several others as patrons watched the Euro 2024 football tournament final on television.
Al-Qaeda-linked militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for last week’s deadly attack through its affiliated radio station, saying the blast targeted a nighttime meeting of security and government workers.
