Colonel Saar thanked the President for sponsoring the printing and publication of his new book, Testimonies of Retired Military Officers and Diplomats.
Mr. Saar expressed his deep gratitude to Mr. Barrow for his generosity, peace, encouragement and support, and presented Mr. Barrow with three autographed new books. The meeting was in a cordial atmosphere, and the two sides had a serious discussion on current domestic and international issues.
The book chronicles the 1994 military coup by young officers that toppled one of Africa’s oldest democracies and ended the nearly three-decade People’s Progressive Party government of Sir Dauda Kairaba Jawara. In a long conversation with President Barrow, the author said that in addition to presenting the true story and circumstances that led to the ominous events of July 22, 1994, his theme was also to educate soldiers about the potential dangers that a coup poses to society. “I want every soldier to read this book and I hope it will become a textbook for anti-coup prescriptions across Africa,” Colonel Sarr told the Gambian president.
In his speech, President Barrow stressed his strong commitment to helping Gambians in need, especially in the field of academic and scholarly pursuits.
However, Mr. Barrow lamented that our reading culture is declining significantly due to easy access to social media. He expressed hope that Col. Samsudin Sar’s latest work would inspire Gambians to take up writing and encourage a new reading culture.
He thanked Mr. Sarr for his initiative and prayed that the book would become a bestseller like his debut book, “Meeting in Conakry.”
