The Edo State Government has accused the state’s reinstated Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, of masterminding the attack on the Benin City Airport Road.
Recall that the governorship candidate of the All India Progressive Congress, Monday Okpebholo and Shaibu escaped an assassination attempt on Thursday.
It was gathered that a police inspector named Okon, attached to Okpebholo, was killed in the attack.
Reacting to the incident on Friday, the Edo State Commissioner for Communications and Positioning, Chris Nehikhare, in a statement to the public condemned the attack and accused Shahibu of organizing the thugs.

He said: “Frustrated by the turn of events, Shaibu ignored the advice and warnings of the Police Commissioner and left the airport area and ran into a crowd of waiting thugs who then followed him into the city centre, firing at random and unleashing violence on innocent citizens who were going about their lawful business.
“This frenzied shooting and disruption of law and order resulted in the wanton destruction of property, injuries to passers-by and security personnel, and the loss of life of a police officer.
“On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a judgment upholding the impeachment of former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, following which the Edo State Government immediately appealed the judgment and stayed its execution as it is the right of the government.
“We have informed the relevant authorities including the police in accordance with the law.
“Hence, Philip Shaib remains impeached as Deputy Governor of Edo State until the Court of Appeal decides otherwise.”
