Malian artist Toumani Diabaté died this Friday at the age of 58, his son Sidiki Diabaté announced on social networks. “God, who gave life, also gave death, and to him we shall return. My confidant, my pillar, my guide, my best friend, my dear father, is gone forever,” wrote the young Malian singer.
Toumani Diabaté is a great kora player, born in a famous family of ballads, who has spent his life defending traditional music, enriching his musical career with about 15 albums released throughout his career. Born in a family of musical fathers and sons, his father Sidiki Diabaté, nicknamed “The King of Kora”, was famous throughout West Africa. Little Toumani started playing at the age of 5. At the age of 13, he joined the Koulikoro Orchestra, which won the Best Traditional Orchestra Award at the Mali Biennial. Then he joined the National Symphony Orchestra of his country.
Toumani accompanied the singer Kandia Kouyaté and collaborated with another kora player, Ballaké Sissoko, and Ali Farka Touré, with whom he produced the album In the Heart of the Moon in 2005. He also won several Grammy Awards for this collaboration. He also crossed West African music with the blues, thanks to his meeting with Taj Mahal, and collaborated with Icelandic stars Björk and Damon Albarn, thus fusing Mandinka traditions with Western music several times.
