The European Patent Office (EPO) has announced that engineers Fiorenzo Dioni and Richard Oberle have won the prestigious European Inventor Award 2024 in the category “Industry” for their revolutionary invention in the field of automotive production. Working at Idra Italia in Brescia, the Italian-German duo developed the Giga Press, the world’s largest die-casting machine equipped with the innovative 5S injection system.

The European Patent Office (EPO) has recognised the importance of this invention, which is expected to fundamentally change the automotive manufacturing process, especially in the field of electric vehicles. Giga Press allows you to produce larger automotive parts using fewer components, thus reducing waste and energy consumption. In particular, Giga Press aims to simplify the production process of the underbody of large vehicles. Unlike traditional technologies that require the assembly of multiple individual castings, this new technology only produces two or three larger parts, thus significantly reducing waste and energy consumption.

“The Giga Press is revolutionizing the automotive industry and will change the die-casting world forever,” says Dioni. “Our invention is first and foremost a market development, because the input comes from the market itself.” The engineer highlights the numerous advantages of the technology, including lower investments, greater energy savings and economic benefits for the end user. Oberle, for his part, emphasizes the uniqueness of the invention and the importance of this innovation in the age of electric vehicles.

The invention not only optimizes the production process, but also brings significant advantages in terms of sustainability. Powered by natural gas, the Giga Press significantly reduces production costs for automakers, enables lean production and reduces transportation costs. In addition, the machine includes a metal recovery system that collects aluminum slag and scrap for future melting cycles, further reducing waste.

According to the European Aluminium Association, this recycling initiative consumes approximately 95% less energy and produces less greenhouse gases than traditional methods, marking a significant step forward in sustainable production practices. IDRA Italia estimates indicate that the latest version of the Giga Press uses 54% less energy.
