Kutukale High Security Prison: The Nigerien Army Proves Its Responsiveness in the Face of Insurgency A few days ago, the Kutukale High Security Prison was in the headlines again because of the dismal progress of the prison break, rumors – others would say evil tongues – quickly described as an attack whose target was the prison to release the alleged terrorist leader. This is not the case, as we can quickly learn from consistent sources (even unofficial ones but well-informed on the subject). The Tillaberi region, which is in a state of insecurity, will then experience its most terrible day, as the authorities decide to take seriously the prison break of detainees who finally, without intelligence, believe that at such a moment they can dare to break out. Such an operation would be a victory in a country, especially in a region where the army has been on maximum alert for months, fighting against instrumentalized dark forces that disrupt the peaceful life of the people. As in the famous movie “24 Hours”, this day was one of the longest in the region.
It’s been a long day….
The information spread widely on social networks, giving rise to all forms of rumors and speculations, some more interesting than others, and which ones we have not heard of? Ah, the poor journalists on social networks, each with their own fantasy of becoming a man or woman of this profession in their spare time, this is because information has become difficult to control, since the state has lost its monopoly. Images, videos, audios, sounds of weapons flooded the network, and everyone used their street-making expertise to give credibility to their announcements. The press release of the Ministry of the Interior better reminded people of the events that were unfolding in the region, which prompted the authorities to cordon off the entire area, and this area in particular, in order to track down the escapees from prison. The announced curfew immediately stopped the movement in the area, especially the surrounding areas, and all residents were ordered not to go out, leaving the ground to the National Defense Security Service, who searched in every corner for those who left, and those who thought they had brilliant intelligence escaped through the cracks of the military net. During this time, social networks were discussing, people were sharing information, and everywhere mentioned cases of escaped terrorists being captured, tracked down, getting out of harm’s way.
The truth about a day of panic…
It is undoubtedly due to negligence that the prisoners picked up the weapon and used it to create panic in the center of the prison. When we entered with food for the prisoners, the mutineers suddenly appeared and attacked the guards, creating panic in the center. Since the threat did not come from outside, the prison guards kept calm and prevented more prisoners from escaping. Thus, they were able to avoid the worst, protect lives, especially the wounded, and contain the rebellion. But it is worth noting that no political prisoners tried to escape; the latter did not worry about the atmosphere in this prison this afternoon, although it is one of the most heavily guarded prisons in the country.
The detained soldiers bravely remained calm in the face of this situation, immediately providing aid to the wounded soldiers in the center, evacuating them and protecting their lives. Faced with the so-called internal revolution, the soldiers resisted, not allowing themselves to be intimidated by the unexpected, insisting that not all detainees could leave the prison and chasing others who managed to leave until reinforcements arrived to contain them. Despite the scale of the intervention, the timely, rapid and strategic curfew measures helped to control the situation without causing much damage, provided shelter for the lives of the local population and, in short, was carried out with professionalism. We can only salute the professionalism of the prison guards, who, while evacuating the wounded, did not abandon the prison to let others leave.
An epic deployment of troops…
We will understand that times have changed in terms of military operations, and that the army is rediscovering all its operational strength on the ground, another army that is ignorant of ground realities and cannot understand its rich air power. The office that is conditioned, that dictates to him what actions to take in the face of a threat, is all that the brave soldier has known and endured in other times – follow my gaze. Then, at the direction of the military authorities, they immediately go on the offensive, searching in the smallest corners for the hiding places of those who know that they have lost everything. In solidarity with the population that cannot be complicit, the soldiers finally occupy them and eliminate the most dangerous. On the right bank of Namaro, we learn that the reception committee is setting out to warmly welcome those who may try to risk crossing the river, knowing that the gates on the Tillabery and Ouallam sides are sealed. on them. The weather was hot and throughout the night the army combed the area under aerial surveillance, choosing to say little and to do its effective work discreetly, which, as another person said, showed that “Niger on July 26, 2023 is not July 25, 2023.” The brave army held its ground and we could hear on social networks that people were freed from the threat, rejoicing and proud of their soldiers for defeating the enemy. When the Western media stop hyping up such events, because everyone will understand that things did not happen as they expected, continue to comment and invite experts in a certain field to debate. They may not be overly contemptuous, just to mislead the public’s perception of what is happening in the Sahel country.
This escape is a lesson and a warning…
It is not correct to say that this is a reaction to the conditions of their detention. Moreover, it will be clear to everyone that no one dared to storm this prison and then leave quietly. Since the CNSP came to power, we have taken the military and the authorities very seriously in terms of security. This is a fact and it is undoubtedly the biggest lesson from this incident that has made headlines.
But it is also a warning to the new authorities that everything is fragile and that they must be extremely vigilant to be able to effectively control the country. They must not forget that they have made many enemies, not to mention enemies, since they came to power and certain disturbing and hurtful decisions. These are people who are suffering internally from the loss of power or the imprisonment of their loved ones since the events of July 2023, and who are also losing pawns in a country that Traore calls “living room slaves” and are not ready to make their task easier. State management cannot accommodate this kind of sentimentalism and requires strict discipline to face adversity. State management is too serious for us to play with, especially in such complex periods. Therefore, the CNSP must understand these things, especially when it is dealing with a party called PNDS, which has not yet admitted defeat, collaborating with enemies underground to derail the transition. This is the advice of analysts.
We have reason to be proud of the Nigerien army and of these soldiers who fight day and night to protect lives, cities, villages and roads, so that Nigeriens can sleep and work more peacefully.
