NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Each year, Water Week in the Bahamas is celebrated as an opportunity to inform, educate and raise awareness among the public that water is a precious resource that should be protected and preserved. For the past 35 years, the Water and Wastewater Company has led these efforts through employee and public messaging.
“Employee engagement is a key factor in the success of our annual program,” explains Senior Public Affairs Manager Visna Armbrister, as both frontline staff and executives participate in Water Week events, from exhibitions and parades to school visits. It truly is a team effort”.

For the past eight years, the highlight of the company’s National Water Week activities has been the National Essay/Video Contest, which provides students from across the country with the opportunity to participate by submitting essays and videos on water-related topics.
“The essay contest has been very successful over the years,” Ms. Armbrister said, “and adding the video element has made it even more successful, which is one of the main ways we continue to educate the community about the importance of water in our lives.”

This year, students were asked to focus on “The Importance of Water During a Pandemic.” Entries from 12 schools will compete for the top prize, a $5,000 scholarship to study at an accredited college/university locally or abroad. The winner of the contest will be announced on Monday, May 2, through the company’s social media pages as part of a series of events planned this week, which will officially take place May 1-6 under the theme “Taking Action for National Sustainability,” highlighting WSC’s sustainability initiatives across the country in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
“Since Hurricane Dorian, WSC has been working tirelessly to rebuild Abaco’s water and sewer infrastructure,” noted Acting General Manager Robert Deal, “with a major effort being the conversion of the well site and pump station in Marsh Harbour into a solar power plant.”

These efforts are part of a major collaborative effort between WSC and two key NGOs. “The company is very grateful to UNICEF and our partner Water Mission for their help and support in this effort. The project in the Abaco Islands is a big step towards greater energy conservation and we are pleased to have their support to ensure the full realization of this project”.
Work at the Marsh Harbour site currently includes the installation of a new 1,500,000 imperial gallon water storage tank, and a new modern pump station with high efficiency pumps and energy management systems to maximise the use of solar energy. More than $2.5 million has been spent on the solar project at the Marsh Harbour pump station compound, with an additional $2.6 million contract awarded to rebuild and improve the Marsh Harbour water supply system.
“The Water and Sewerage Company is very proud of the work it does here in Abaco and across the country,” said Mr. Diehl. “We are pleased to be taking a leading role in sustainability and conservation, and we hope that the work we do will continue to raise awareness of this important resource among the Bahamian people during National Water Week and for many weeks to come.”
