The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has handed over a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to the Sri Lanka Navy with generous funding from the Government of Japan. The Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, Mr. Hideaki Mizugoshi, handed over the RHIB to the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, today (19 July 2024) at the Navy Headquarters.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is committed to combating drug trafficking and other maritime crime and continuously assists stakeholders in supporting such efforts.
A Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) is essential for the rapid and safe approach and boarding of vessels during Visit, Board, Search and Seize (VBSS) operations. To enhance the Sri Lanka Navy’s capabilities in these operations, particularly those conducted by the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron, UNODC provided the Navy with this RHIB using funding provided by the Government of Japan.
Also present at the ceremony were Colonel Yuki YOKOHARI, Defence Attaché of the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, officials of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and a group of senior naval officers.
