TANGERANG, Banten (ANTARA) – A 22-year-old South Korean citizen, Kim J, was arrested by staff at Terminal 3 in the international departure area of Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Soetta) in Banten province for smuggling 94 reptiles of various types in a suitcase.

Banten Quarantine Center head Tuerhadi Noorahman said on Friday that the seized reptiles included 50 snakes of various types, 41 geckos, a rhinoceros iguana and two lizards.

“The drugs were hidden in 24 bags and were ready to be smuggled into South Korea,” Norakman revealed.

He said Kim checked in on Asiana Airlines flight OZ-762 from Jakarta to South Korea on Wednesday (July 17).

“In this case, we found that a passenger on a flight to South Korea attempted to illegally carry an animal out of the country in his luggage,” he commented.

“We are currently investigating the modus operandi. Kim said he did it because he loves animals. He does not understand Indonesian or English. We are conducting an in-depth investigation into this case,” said Norakman.

Currently, the Public Service Investigators (PPNS) are questioning the suspects at the Banten Quarantine Center and Sota Airport.

“So far, progress shows that there are no detentions because Kim Jong-un is cooperative. We have only seized evidence and travel documents,” he said.

For his actions, Kim J was charged with violating Article 87 and Article 34 a and c of the Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine Law No. 21 of 2019, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of up to IDR 3 billion ($180,000).

“At the same time, we will look at the sanctions relationship in the law; Article 87 will be sanctioned by 3 years in prison and a fine of 3 billion rupiah,” he revealed.
