University funding could fall by more than €500 million, €513,264,188 to be precise: this is what the draft ministerial decree on the General Financing Fund predicts. The Italian university rectors gathered in Cruy sound the alarm. They claim that with these cuts, even covering staff costs is unsustainable. They go further: “The clause proposes important critical elements that, if confirmed, could not only prevent the healthy development of the National University System, but also put at risk the very existence of Italian State Universities”. Not only salaries are therefore at risk, but also research.

Meeting Cancelled

The 85 rectors were supposed to meet this morning with the Minister of Universities, Anna Maria Bernini, to discuss this thorny issue with her, but the meeting broke down abruptly and a chill fell between the parties. The minister seemed disappointed and annoyed by Cruy’s detailed document, in which the rectors asked to be informed in advance of the allocation criteria and the discussion table. “The General Financing Fund, which is still under discussion, has chosen to spread unfounded and alarmist figures accusing it of cutting university funding. Instead of a substantive discussion with the minister and his staff, it has resorted to a biased and completely specious public debate”, thus ruling out any possibility of comparison, the minister said.
