Bob Newhart, the American comedian whose comedy became one of the most celebrated television stars of his era, has died at age 94, his publicist announced Thursday.

The Chicago-based comedian was an accountant before he found fame as a comedian, and his deadpan delivery has earned him widespread acclaim.

He died at his home in Los Angeles after a series of brief illnesses, his longtime publicist, Jerry Digney, said in a statement.
