He revealed this huge jump in revenue growth during a recent interview on West Coast Radio’s Peter Gomez’s Coffee Time show.
When Peter asked about the amount collected by GRA in May and June, CG Darboe said that the amount collected in May was over Dh1.7 billion and the amount collected in June was over Dh1.5 billion.
He reiterated that the government, through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, has asked GRA to achieve an annual revenue target of AED19.2 billion by 2024.
He said that as of the end of June, halfway through the year, the GRA still needed to collect Dh8.8 billion to achieve its annual revenue target for 2024.
When asked about the secret to their tremendous success, CG Darboe was quick to highlight the effectiveness of the digital systems introduced by GRA.
In recent years, new digital systems have made a huge contribution to helping GRA achieve a leap forward and increase in tax revenue.
The Director General of the Provident Fund affirmed that the introduction of smart technology has greatly alleviated and closed some of the major loopholes that have hampered GRA tax collection over the years.
CG Darboe also reviewed the challenges of establishing new technological systems before the people or taxpayers of the country can cherish and appreciate some of the reforms introduced by the GRA.
“At the GRA level, we are used to certain new challenges from the public,” the astute GRA boss said. “But in the end, people really are more appreciative and some would even say that this new technology could have been there earlier.”
He introduced ASCUDA++ to ASCUDA World, saying that when the technology was launched, there was a lot of hoopla, but eventually people began to appreciate the system.
He further aptly quoted: “Also, when the GRA introduced the digital tax stamp, it caused a lot of controversy. But today, go to supermarkets, manufacturing companies and factories, they are all using digital tax stamps. This will help the GRA to generate the revenue it deserves for the government in a fair and transparent manner.”
