Trump attacks: Biden calls for gun ban

Joe Biden has again called on Congress to ban assault rifles, including the model used in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Trump was grazed in the ear by a bullet on Saturday when a gunman shot at him from a nearby rooftop during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“The AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump,” Biden told an audience at a conference in Las Vegas. “This assault weapon has killed many people, including children. It’s time to ban them.”

This was his request as he returned to the campaign trail for the first time since the attack.

Biden’s campaign was on pause in the days following the shooting. Verbal attacks were halted, television ads were pulled, and many prominent Democrats promoted messages of unity.

Biden continued his speech on Tuesday, lamenting how “violent” politics have become. But he continued to harshly criticize Trump in his speech to the convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a prominent civil rights organization.

“Just because we’re politically divided doesn’t mean we should stop telling the truth. Who you are, what you’ve done, what you’re going to do — those are all fair game,” he said.

“Let me say that again, because Trump lied outright about this,” he told the chamber of mostly black voters.

“Under the Biden-Harris administration, black unemployment has hit an all-time low,” the president added. Statistics show his administration has hit an all-time low in unemployment Unemployment rate for black or African Americans in 2023which is 4.8%.

Gun rights is an issue Biden has frequently raised during his campaign.

In 1994, he was instrumental in passing the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. He mentioned the legislation in his speech, saying “I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again.”

In 2022, Biden signed the most important gun safety bill in more than 20 years during his first term as president, which included strengthening background checks and other protections for gun buyers.

But his assault weapons bans have repeatedly faced strong opposition from Republicans.

As the president returns to the campaign trail Republican National Convention (RNC) The speeches wrapped up a second day on Tuesday, with multiple speakers, including former presidential rivals Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, unanimously endorsing Trump.

Donald Trump has said he would roll back all of Biden’s new gun regulations if elected in November, a stance that showed no signs of changing even after Saturday’s attempted murder.

Police have yet to determine the motive of the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot Trump after climbing onto the roof of a building 130 meters (426 feet) from where Trump was speaking.

An independent review of the Secret Service’s handling of the shooting is underway, and Republican leaders in Congress have also announced an investigation.
