With more cruise ships expected to visit Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Coast Guard has stepped up its vigilance to ensure maritime security in the region. Coast Guard Sector Micronesia/Guam said its personnel conducted safe boardings of the MS Artania, which arrived in Guam on Sunday, and the MS Zuiderdam, which arrived on Feb. 18, to secure the island’s maritime borders. “The operations of the regional boarding teams are vital to our mission to protect the maritime gateways of Guam and the surrounding region,” said Lt. Chelsea Garcia, the exercise’s lead boarding officer. “By reviewing ship documents, getting to know the crew, ensuring all the right security measures are in place — and by working with global efforts like the International Port Security Program — the SBT ensures that ships are following the strictest security rules. It’s all about keeping people and waters safe while staying connected to the world,” she added.
