A 34-year-old resident of Kochani developed high fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and then collapsed on July 7 and was taken to PHI General Hospital Kochani by ambulance for prolonged activities.
An epidemiologist in charge of the Kochani Public Health Center prepared an epidemiological survey for the patient. Two days later, the patient was referred to the Infectious Diseases Department of the Štip PHI Clinical Hospital.
“Through serological tests, information on the presence of antibodies against the pathogen – West Nile virus – was obtained from the IJZ Virology Laboratory, i.e. West Nile fever was confirmed. The patient was hospitalized at the PHI Clinical Hospital – Shtip between July 9 and 15, 2024 and has been discharged in good health. Data during the epidemiological investigation conducted by epidemiologists of the Kokani Public Health Center were obtained from the patient, family doctor, infectious disease specialists and medical documents. Between June 24 and July 1, 2024, the patient traveled to Tunisia, where he found a large number of mosquitoes and was bitten by mosquitoes despite the fact that he used mosquito repellents most of the time during his stay,” noted the report of the Institute of Public Health – Skopje.
The report states that mosquitoes were also found in the Kochani area. According to the information provided by the responsible epidemiologist, disinfection is carried out regularly.
A total of two laboratory-confirmed cases of West Nile fever were reported in the region in 2024. The first case, also an imported case, was registered in April in a resident of the municipality of Vasilivo, on the territory of the Strumica Public Health Center.
