The Senegalese Lions have dropped one spot in the FIFA rankings, which the world football governing body updated this Thursday, July 18. The Senegalese team now occupies 19th place in the latest world rankings, after giving up a historic 17th place in June.

The drop in the ranking can be explained by the performances of other national teams in recent major tournaments. The 2024 European Championships and the 2024 Copa America, which ended this weekend, had a significant impact on the rankings. Spain won the European Championship, while Argentina won the Copa America. The Oceania Cup of Nations, won by New Zealand on June 30, was also taken into account. These results shook up the world order, with Senegal falling from 18th to 19th place.

Despite the drop, Senegal remains the second-best team in Africa, behind only Morocco, which also dropped two places in the world rankings. Aliou Cisse’s Lions remain ahead of Egypt (36th), Ivory Coast (38th) and Nigeria (39th), confirming their position at the top of the continent.

World No.1 Argentina remains in first place, followed by France, who are in the semi-finals of the Euros. European champions Spain move up five places to third. Euro finalists England move up to fourth, while Brazil drops to fifth. Belgium drops three places to sixth, followed by the Netherlands (seventh) and Portugal (eighth). Copa America finalists Colombia return to the top 10 in ninth place, while Italy completes their group in tenth place. The next FIFA ranking will be announced on September 19, 2024.
