In the 12 months to June this year, the cost of goods and services faced by consumers rose by an average of 5.4%.
STATIN deputy director Leesha Delatie-Budair said inflation in the year to June was affected by rising costs of “food and non-alcoholic beverages”, with prices in this category rising by 4.0%.
Costs also rose as the cost of “transportation” rose 11.1%, while a 5.4% increase in the cost of “housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels” also contributed to the rise.
“The inflation rate in the ‘food and non-alcoholic beverages’ sector was affected by a 3.8% increase in the ‘foodstuffs’ index, an 11.1% increase in the ‘fruits and nuts’ index, and a 4.0% increase in the ‘cereals and cereal products’ index,” Ms. De Lati-Budel reported.
Higher prices of oranges, ripe bananas, pineapples and desiccated coconut were the main reasons for the increase in prices in the “fruits and nuts” category.
The deputy director-general made the remarks on Wednesday during STATIN’s first in-person press conference since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
