A 26-year-old Filipino seaman was safely evacuated from a container ship heading northwest of Guam on Saturday. The military was alerted when the seaman suffered severe abdominal problems. He was aboard the Liberian-flagged 850-foot container ship Carmell 1, en route to Vietnam, when first responders received the call Friday afternoon. The vessel was approximately 400 nautical miles northwest of Guam. The U.S. Coast Guard Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam was alerted. An MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter crew from HSC-25 arrived on board the vessel Saturday morning. The seaman was then airlifted off the vessel amid 17 mph winds and 10-foot waves. Guam Fire and Rescue then transported him to the Naval Hospital Guam, where he is currently in stable condition.
