MOGADISHU (HOL) — African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces have killed at least two civilians in Blomaril, Lower Shabelle State, according to local officials.
Maadey Jeilani Ali, the vice-chairman for social affairs in the Kuntuware district, confirmed that ATMIS troops, specifically Ugandan troops, entered a farm in Buulo Mareer and encountered three people, two of whom were killed. The third person escaped after being injured.
“After shooting the two suspects, the ATMIS troops massacred them again. They became suspicious of the men while on patrol and shot them and then massacred them again. There were three suspects in total and they killed two of them while the third managed to escape after being injured. Two months ago, they also killed a farmer returning from his fields,” said Maadeey Jeylaani Cali.
The murder has caused outrage in Blomaril, where residents have faced similar incidents at the hands of ATMIS forces on several occasions. Dozens of residents, mostly young people, took to the streets in protest, demanding justice and accountability. Authorities are expected to step up security along main thoroughfares and near government and security buildings.
The ATMIS command and the Federal Government of Somalia have not yet issued any statement on the matter.
Residents of Blomaril and Lower Shabelle regions have called on the Federal Government and the South-West State Government to hold ATMIS accountable for its actions in the region, accusing the military of repeatedly and deliberately killing civilian farmers.
