“These six are just political heads who swore allegiance to the government. All MPs should do so out of respect for the prime minister (office). But I ask you, have they jumped ship, and to which party have they jumped ship?”

(Atmosphere) – A former PKR leader said PAS should be reprimanded for inducting Limbai assemblyman Muhammad Jailaini Khamis into its camp after he signed an anti-defection pledge in 2022.

PKR deputy secretary-general and lawyer S. Raveentharan said the move was legal but unethical.

He said it sends a message to voters that their elected representatives may switch allegiances at the expense of their constituents.

“The infamous ‘Sheraton’ backdoor operation to seize power at the expense of the elected government during the global pandemic in 2020 created political instability and ruined the entire country. (It) had a selfish purpose and could have resulted in loss of life as the government was focused on staying in power instead of channelling all resources into fighting the pandemic,” Ravintaran said.

“When Jelaini was running in 2022, he was running under Barisan Nasional and now he is switching sides just because the Malacca state assembly has been slow to pass a similar parliamentary bill. This is inappropriate.

He said a better option would be for Jalani to resign his seat and run again as a member of PAS in the by-election.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the move was legal because the Malacca government had not yet implemented the anti-defection law when Mohamad Jalani defected.
