ASOJ.ORG – The Somali Association of Journalists (ASOJ) is deeply concerned about the escalating violence against Somali journalists in the Gedo region, particularly in Beled Hawo district on the Somalia-Kenya border, where one journalist was injured by security forces and another was arbitrarily detained by local authorities.

On Sunday, March 28, 2020, intelligence forces in Beled Hawa arrested journalist Mohamed Kaafi Aden from the Gedo region, one of several journalists who publicly condemned the attack on journalist Abdirizak Sheikh Ismail (Africa) in a recorded video. Abdirizak Sheikh Ismail, a radio journalist, was severely injured by the forces on March 24, 2020.

Journalist Abdirizak Afrika was taken to Mogadishu for further medical assistance as his condition could not be treated in Beled Hawa and he is currently being treated at Erdogan Hospital in Mogadishu.

ASOJ considers the violence against journalists by security forces in Beled Hawa to be unacceptable and a clear example of attacks and violence against journalists.

“We call on Beledi Hawa authorities to immediately arrest the soldier who harmed Abdirizak Afrika and bring him to justice, and we also call for the unconditional release of the detained journalists,” said ASOJ President Ali Adan Hashi.

“ASOJ is closely following the medical treatment of injured journalist Abdirazak Afrika and we hope that he will recover as soon as possible according to the instructions of the attending doctors.” Dahir Alasow ASOJ The Secretary-General said.
