Election Commission officials held a special press conference this morning to announce that the presidential election will be held before the end of this month. Hours after the announcement, Pohotu Party founder Basil Rajapaksa, its national organizer Namal Rajapaksa and Pohotu Party secretary general Sagala Kariyawasam came to the Election Commission.
Representatives of the Pohotu Party told the media after negotiations with the Electoral Commission that they demanded that the election should not be postponed for any reason.
Namal Rajapaksa told the media that whether the president’s term is five or six years is not a meaningful matter at the moment.
In addition, the MPs said that it is not a meaningful task to determine whether the president’s term will be six or five years at present, and stressed that if this issue is brought to Parliament with the aim of postponing the presidential election, it will not receive their support.
