Vance, who was chosen as vice president by Republican candidate Donald Trump on Monday, told a conference earlier this month following Britain’s Labour Party victory in the July 4 election that Britain was the “first true Islamic country” with nuclear weapons, prompting laughter from the audience.
He added that he was discussing with a friend which country would become the first “real Islamic state with nuclear weapons,” Reuters reported.
He added: “We have finally decided that this could actually be Britain since the Labour Party came to power”, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Rayner told ITV that Vance had previously said “a lot of shocking things,” adding, “We care about governance in the UK and we care about working with our international allies.”
Several prominent figures within the Labour Party have criticised Trump since he was first elected president in 2016. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also criticised his proposal to restrict travel to the US by Muslims.
However, some prominent figures are seeking to build bridges ahead of the US election in November as polls show Trump is heading for victory.
Britain’s new Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who took part in protests against Trump’s visit to London in 2018, met with Vance, who has previously criticized Trump, in March this year.
Reiner downplayed the significance of previous criticisms of Trump and said Labour would be different in government than it was in opposition and would work constructively with the winner of the U.S. presidential election.
She added, “The United States is our primary ally, and if the American people decide who their president and vice president are, we will work with them. Of course we will.”
