After much hesitation, Sahra Wagenknecht left the Left in October 2023. The party was largely defeated in recent elections, but the number of members is growing.

Party leader Janine Wissler spoke of the “large number of entrants” that was encouraging and motivating. “The focus now is on activating new members in order to renew the party and return to the Bundestag as a parliamentary group in 2025.” The separation from Wagenknecht was clearly the right time for many to join the Left.
