A train derailed and caught fire after a bridge partially collapsed in Arizona on Wednesday morning. CBS affiliate KPHO-TV reportsIt was not immediately clear what caused the fire or the derailment.
Union Pacific said the freight train derailed around 6:15 a.m. local time and that eight to 10 cars were on fire. The company said the south side of the bridge over Tempe Town Lake near Phoenix collapsed, sending the cars into an empty park below.
“There were three tank trucks on the ground beneath the bridge. Two contained cyclohexanone and one contained rubber material. No leaks were reported and no tank trucks were involved in the fire,” Union Pacific said in a statement.
No one in the train car was injured, but a passenger in the park was treated for smoke inhalation, the report said. The bridge underwent an annual inspection on July 9 and the cause of the derailment is under investigation, the report added.
At least one of the burning train cars was carrying lumber, some of which fell into the lake below, the Korean Peace Organization reported.
“I turned around and I was horrified,” said Camille Kimball, who rode her bicycle under the bridge before it collapsed. “Now the fire is pouring down the middle of the bridge into the lake. … It looks like hell, it really does. Hell. … The fire is so intense and the sky is filled with black smoke.”
