Sunday, March 10, is not only the opening day of Fire Recognition Week, but also a week of events celebrating the 39th anniversary of the Guam Fire Department (GFD). The GFD officially separated from the Department of Public Safety on March 13, 1985. The GFD muster will begin at 10 a.m. in the Agana Mall parking lot, according to spokesman Lt. Nick Garrido. “We’re trying to bring back that camaraderie within the GFD,” Garrido said. “We’ll have kadun pika challenges, mini lessons for kids… and competitions between different stations, different bikes and different personnel.” Throughout the week, there will also be three-on-three basketball games, beanbag tossing contests and even a kickball game. The week-long birthday celebration will end with the GFD Fire Formal, where the department will present awards.
