July 14, 2024 (El Geneina, Nyala) – Sudanese military warplanes launched a series of air strikes on Sunday morning, targeting multiple locations in Nyala, South Darfur and El Geneina, West Darfur. The attacks caused civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries.
Alaa Eldin Babik, a journalist based in Geneina, told Sudan Tribune that a girl was killed and about 10 others were injured in the airstrikes against the city. He stressed that the airstrikes targeted the Nasim neighborhood and residential areas in western Geneina, and there were no obvious military targets.
West Darfur has been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since November, which drove Sudanese troops out of the state. The RSF has been accused of human rights abuses and war crimes against the Masalit ethnic group. El Geneina has been repeatedly targeted by military airstrikes.
In Nyala, witnesses reported to Sudan Tribune that a warplane circled over the city for a long time before dropping several unguided bombs. Nyala Maternity and Child Hospital and gas storage facilities were damaged in the bombing. Residential areas across Nyala were also attacked. The city has been subject to frequent air strikes since the rapid security forces seized control late last year.
The Sudanese military claimed the airstrikes were aimed at destroying military supplies, including ammunition, rocket launchers, drones and communications equipment, allegedly delivered by UAE aircraft to the RSF. The RSF denied the allegations and accused the army of deliberately targeting civilians to displace them.
