Panthers and Eels win

Week two of the Cook Islands Rugby Union Rarotonga Club 15s saw some exciting action in the top men’s division, with Tupapa putting in a strong performance against Titikaveka, while Awatiu had the upper hand against Arorangi.

The week’s opener took place at Aretere Park in Awatiu on Friday, with the Tupapa Panthers defeating the Titikaweka Bulldogs by a final score of 32-0.

The score may have been a little too much for the Panthers, but the Bulldogs’ effort was a reflection of their spirit. Both teams had equal possession, but it was the Panthers’ execution and ability to convert their chances into points that mattered. The majority of the Panthers’ points came from turnovers, showing their team cohesion and connection.

Standout players for the Bulldogs included energetic defender William Rani, busy forward Petro Tumutoa and reserve defenders Tangi and Brian Akawa. For the Panthers, the young Willie brothers – TJ at No.8 and forward Olive – played a major role. Their strong backline of Ferretti Arnau, Tomasi Wellington and Tua Lavula caused plenty of trouble for the opposition.

The Panthers led 20-0 at halftime.

Home team Awati Unikau Eels narrowly defeated the Arorangi Bears 12-3 at Aretre Park on Saturday. Although the Bears led 3-0 for most of the game, the Eels’ confidence and self-belief shone through in the end. The Eels scored two points in the final 10 minutes of the game to secure the win in an otherwise up-and-down game.

The Bears’ best performers included young counterattacking defender Nia Remuera, busy flanker Kianna Pomare and reliable veteran Rob Heather. For the Eels, hard-working lock Adyn Kapi and underrated centre-back Jale Lagidela stood out.

At halftime, the Bears led 3-0 on a penalty kick from Nia Remuela.

Tumapipa’s Tamaitumaru Jr Willie and Awatiu’s Adyn Kapi were named players of the match in their respective matches.

Additionally, Saturday afternoon featured a number of youth development games and the Maine Women’s Tuoepolo Tournament, with an emphasis on developing young rugby talent.

These events provide a valuable platform for emerging athletes to showcase their skills and gain experience, which promises a bright future for Cook Islands rugby.
