VIDEO: A four-legged canine with the San Francisco Fire Department made history this week as the first “incident support dog” to be deployed to the scene of a California wildfire. Sadie, a yellow Labrador, is currently stationed at the Shirley Fire in Siskiyou County, about 350 miles north of San Francisco. The fire has burned 14,965 acres and is currently 3% contained, Cal Fire reported Sunday. “They work really hard on the fire line, and they come down after working a few hours in the evening, and Sadie is here to greet them,” said the dog’s trainer, San Francisco firefighter Christina Gibbs. Sadie is a therapy dog that helps relieve the stress firefighters face during the wildfires. “The terrain they deal with is very steep, the daytime hours are long, and the fires are very intense,” Gibbs said. “Her role at the fire camp is to help with the mental health of the firefighters who are just coming off the front lines.”
