There were plenty of community events across the island this past weekend, from goodwill events to entertainment to sports. But one annual event downtown was undoubtedly a crowd pleaser, thrilling onlookers and showcasing some true heroes. For nearly four decades, the Guam Fire Department has been prepared. Always ready for unusual situations that crop up. Someone’s in trouble. Someone in need of a hero. Or just some standout individuals who are trained and willing to step up to the plate to back you up. “This is our annual Fire Recognition Week — we celebrate the founding of the Guam Fire Department on March 13, 1985, when we separated from the Department of Public Safety, and recognize the accomplishments, contributions, camaraderie, morale and drive of our firefighters,” GFD Acting Chief Joey San Nicolas told KUAM News in the Agana Mall parking lot.
