Syrians headed to the polls on Monday for their fourth parliamentary election since the civil war began in 2011. President Bashar al-Assad’s ruling Baath Party, backed by its secular left and Arab nationalist allies, faces little opposition and is expected to remain in power. Syria’s exiled opposition last week condemned the election as “ridiculous,” with only Syrians aged 18 or above living in government-controlled areas eligible to vote and holding an ID card.
