Nico Williams became the second player of Ghanaian descent to win the European Championship. He made football history by contributing to Spain’s victory in the final against England on Sunday night.
Williams, whose elder brother Inaki is a Ghana international, joins Marcel Desailly, who won the title with France in 2000. Before Sunday, Desailly was the only footballer of Ghanaian descent to win the prestigious title.
Williams was one of the best players at Euro 2024, helping Spain win the tournament for the fourth time. The young Spanish wingers worked together effectively, especially when Lamine Yamal provided the assist for Williams, who beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a pinpoint shot two minutes after the break.
Chelsea’s Cole Palmer gave England hope in the 73rd minute when he equalised with a left-foot shot, but Spain won with four minutes left when Oyarzabal headed in Marc Cucurella’s cross.
If England wins, Kobe Mainou, whose parents are both Ghanaian, will become the second Ghanaian player to win the European Cup after Marcel Desailly.
