The Netherlands will donate 20 million euros to the joint fund of the new drone alliance. This should lead to the delivery of one million so-called First-person perspective (Attack) drones are flying over Ukraine. With the help of these drones, the “pilots” can observe from a distance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously asked friends and allies for many drones.

The development and use of drones is becoming increasingly important in military operations. Ukraine lacks drones, while Russia does not. To reduce the shortage, Latvia and Ukraine formed a drone alliance at the beginning of this year, and the Netherlands also joined the alliance. A letter of intent was signed in February.
The alliance aims to donate 1 million drones to Ukraine this year and then expand the scope of supply to other types, such as for reconnaissance. More than 265 companies, including 9 Dutch companies, have registered to supply FPV drones to Ukraine.
“Ukraine will soon need a large number of attack drones. These drones have proven to be very successful on the battlefield. Together with 11 other countries we will ensure this, as we confirmed today at the NATO summit,” said Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans.
Industry and Innovation
Through the alliance, the government hopes to use the innovative potential of Dutch industry to provide military support to Ukraine while also strengthening its own armed forces. In addition, the Netherlands can apply lessons learned from drones to practice in the fields of (counter) drone tactics, strategy and industrial production.
Knowledge and expertise
In the long term, the Netherlands hopes to expand the Drone Alliance to include other initiatives involving drones. After all, knowledge and expertise in the field is most effectively used when bundled. Latvia is setting up a testing and training center.
