In French Polynesia, 4,080 agricultural operations were recorded during the 2023 Agricultural Census (RGA) that met or exceeded at least the specified production threshold.
Of these, nearly 1,200 are farms dedicated to growing copra.
The agricultural area used for growing crops (excluding coconut groves) is 3,135 hectares, or 0.8% of the total area of French Polynesia.
The total agricultural workforce is 5,050 full-time equivalents (FTEs), with approximately 9,500 people working in agriculture.
Only a quarter of farm managers work full-time on the farm. The average age of farm managers is 49 years old, and 31% are women.
The number of people involved in agricultural labour (15,800 in 2012) has decreased compared to the previous agricultural census.
However, breeding work has made progress.
