On July 11, Ukrainian authorities seized a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship accused of transporting grain from Russian-occupied Crimea as part of international sanctions against Russia following the conflict between the two countries.

The ship, named “Usko MFU”, was intercepted in Romanian waters of the Danube. On board were the Azerbaijani captain and twelve crew members. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General said the cargo ship should have turned off its AIS tracking system to avoid detection after at least two stopovers in Sevastopol, Crimea, since November 2023.

The seizure is part of measures taken by Ukraine to enforce sanctions against Russia. Since the beginning of the conflict, many ships have been monitored by Ukrainian authorities to prevent illegal trade from the occupied territories. The Usko MFU cargo ship was included in a list of 25 ships suspected of violating these sanctions.

Cameroonian authorities have not yet reacted to the incident. However, this seizure could have diplomatic and economic repercussions for Cameroon. In fact, the case comes at a time when the country has suspended its registration of vessels operating outside its territorial waters, a decision made in response to concerns raised by the International Maritime Organization regarding suspicious activities of certain Cameroonian vessels.

The international community could put additional pressure on Cameroon to strengthen its maritime control and regulation. The case highlights the challenges countries face in monitoring maritime activity and complying with international sanctions.

The seizure marks a significant event in the enforcement of international sanctions against Russia. It also underscores the importance of countries strengthening maritime controls to prevent illegal activity and maintain their reputation on the international stage.
