Butler, Pennsylvania— Former President Donald Trump is unharmed following multiple shootings at a Pennsylvania rally, according to statements from the U.S. Secret Service and the Trump campaign on Saturday.

When the gunshots rang out, Trump showed a painful expression and raised one hand to cover his right ear, shocking the audience.

The rally had just begun when gunshots rang out and the scene fell into chaos. Trump and the attendees quickly hid on the ground and Secret Service agents surrounded him. The live video showed that there was blood on Trump’s face and the right side of his ear.

A spokesman for the agency said on Twitter: “The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former president is safe,” adding that the situation is currently under active investigation. CNN reported that Trump was injured, but the details are still unclear.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldfinger said one person has been reported dead, according to Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE Witness Ron Moose reported hearing four different gunshots, likening the sounds to “bang, bang, bang.”

Trump campaign spokesman Zhang Zhiqiang confirmed that Trump was not injured and was being examined at a local medical facility. Zhang Zhiqiang said: “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action in this heinous attack. He is fine and is being examined at a local medical facility. More details will be released soon.”

After the rally, the venue was empty, chairs were overturned and the stage was blocked off by yellow police tape. A helicopter could be seen overhead, law enforcement officers patrolled the area and some law enforcement officers were stationed on nearby rooftops.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident, which the White House said came as Trump and Biden are locked in a tight election showdown with polls showing the two candidates tied.

Trump, who will take the Republican nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, has united the party after initially losing some support following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump remains a prominent figure in the Republican Party despite multiple legal challenges, including four criminal indictments. His recent legal troubles include a conviction in May for trying to cover up hush money payments to porn stars, and other prosecutions have been slowed by various legal factors, including a Supreme Court decision granting him partial immunity.

As the two candidates prepare for what is sure to be a bitter campaign, the events at the rally highlighted the tensions and security concerns surrounding the upcoming election.
