On July 10, an American diplomat-turned-technology executive from the Bahamas appeared in U.S. District Court in Charleston for the first time on charges of financial crimes and concealment, but the details remain unclear.
However, Stephanie Powers, an American citizen who served as the chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas, pleaded not guilty on July 10 to one count of participating in government activities for its financial benefit and two counts of concealing or falsifying information.
Each charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
