Tangerang: Free lunch program pilot covers more than 20,000 students

Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) –
The free nutritious lunch (MBG) program will be piloted in Tangerang, Banten Province from August 5 to 9, 2024, targeting 20,157 primary to secondary school students.

Tangerang City Regional Secretary Herman Suwarman said on Saturday that the city government is coordinating with schools participating in the pilot of the program.

He added that the city government will also select 20 schools as implementation sites for the program.

“We hope that the pilot project in Tangerang City will go smoothly and can be replicated nationwide,” he said.

Tangerang and Cilegon cities in Banten province have been selected as pilot areas for the MBG program.

As part of preparations for the implementation of the plan, Tangerang City has already developed strategic steps, including budget and allocation.

“We are committed to making this pilot project a success. We have already made all the preparations, from budget mechanisms, implementation to allocation, and will achieve it as per the timetable by early August (2024),” Suvarman said.

Meanwhile, Tangerang Acting Mayor Noordin discussed the MBG plan during a meeting with the National Resilience Council (Wantannas) in Jakarta.

The free lunch program was initiated by President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

He said the pilot project in Tangerang is expected to become a model nationwide, from school selection, logistics preparation, distribution mechanism to lunch menu.

The special staff of the Secretary General of Wantanas City, Taviotawan City, expressed appreciation for the Tangerang City Government’s readiness to support the MBG pilot project.

“The meal packaging and milk are very well designed and appealing to kids. It’s an inspiration to all of us,” said Bei.
