The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs urged all Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura in the month of Muharram and follow the Sunnah of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in a statement today was keen to remind all Muslims of the advice to fast on Ashura, noting that fasting on this day is advisable under Islamic law.
The statement explained that scholars believe that there are three levels of fasting on Ashura: “It is best to fast the day before and the day after, or then fast on the ninth and tenth day, or fast on the tenth day alone,” noting that the tenth and eleventh fasts are permissible for Muslims for those who miss the ninth fast, indicating that all of these levels are permissible.
The statement points out the benefits of fasting on Ashura and says: “Fasting on Ashura makes up for the past year. In the authentic hadith of Abu Qatada al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked about fasting on Ashura and he said: It makes up for the past year.”
The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs concluded in its statement by reminding Muslims of the virtues of fasting on this day, reviving the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and seeking atonement for sins and seeking reward from the Almighty God.
