The Kremlin warned on Saturday that the deployment of U.S. missiles in Germany could make European capitals targets of Russian missiles, renewing a Cold War-style confrontation.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke of a “paradox” in which “Europe is the target of our missiles, but our countries are the target of American missiles in Europe.”
“We have enough capabilities to contain these missiles, but the potential victims are the capitals of these countries,” he told Russian state television Rossiya Channel 1.
Peskov also suggested that such a confrontation could undermine all of Europe.
When the channel’s host Pavel Zarubin pointed out that the Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union, he said: “These are not the best times for Europe. If the situation changes, it is inevitable that history will repeat itself.”
The White House announced at the NATO summit on Wednesday that it will regularly deploy long-range weapons including Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany starting in 2026 to enhance deterrence.
“Exercising these advanced capabilities will demonstrate the United States’ commitment to NATO and its contribution to integrated deterrence in Europe,” the White House said.
The Kremlin criticized the move, accusing Washington of moving toward a new Cold War and directly participating in the Ukraine conflict.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov held a telephone conversation with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to discuss ways to reduce the risk of “possible escalation,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.
Since Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in 2022, NATO countries, led by the United States, have strengthened Europe’s defenses.
